Update: The Michigan Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees for animals 7 years of age or older now through November 30!

Original story below.

This November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month at the Michigan Humane Society. These animals are just as loyal and full of love as their younger peers.

It’s no secret that puppies and kittens get a lot of attention when people are looking for a pet to adopt. Sadly, this leaves senior dogs and cats spending more time at the shelters than necessary.

However, adopting a senior pet is a great addition to your family. Animals in their twilight years provide plenty of benefits, including:

  • Constant supervision is rarely necessary compared to caring for and training puppies and kittens.
  • Senior pets are usually a lot calmer in the house and definitely not as mouthy like a puppy.
  • A lot of senior pets are already potty trained, which is very convenient.
  • Senior pets are fully grown so you won’t be caught off guard by unexpected growth spurts.
  • Senior dogs are a great option for college students who want a dog but don’t have the time to raise a puppy.

Thanks to the ASPCA and Subaru, all animals 7 years of age or older have their adoption fees waived November 1-10!

Of course senior pets have their own health needs as they age, including medication and managing their physical activity accordingly. Trust me, they’re worth it though. I had a 9-year-old black lab who was on a lot of medications, but I cherished every moment I had with him.
