Animal welfare organizations are working to make sure families affected by the Midland flooding don’t lose their pets.

MLive reports that the Humane Society of Midland County (HSoMC) is taking in pets of residents who were forced to evacuate their homes. According to HSoMC communications coordinator Casey Nicholson, the organization took in roughly 14 dogs and 20 cats as of Tuesday night.

The Humane Society of Bay County, Saint Clair Animal Control and Midland County Pit Stop are just a few of the organizations ready to help HSoMC should they run out of space.

Mid-Michigan was devastated by massive flooding, forcing 10,000 residents to leave their homes while the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Six to eight inches of heavy rainfall this week led to the Edenville and Sanford dams to fail. Floodwaters crested at about 35 feet around 4 p.m. on Wednesday according to the Detroit Free Press.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has requested federal aid to help with recovery efforts.
