Did you know this week is Volunteer Appreciation Week? We’d like to take a moment to reflect on the overwhelming support the Michigan Humane Society’s volunteer community provides to us on a regular basis. The truth is we simply couldn’t continue our life-saving efforts without the support of folks throughout our communities, and volunteers play a huge role in that. They give their time and talents to our organization because they believe in our mission of compassionate care, community engagement and advocacy for animals.

Over the last year, 4,651 volunteers have worked as part of our MHS team by providing in-shelter, offsite, foster care and special event support. Our amazing volunteers donated 110,488 hours of their time in 2019 alone, which is valued at a staggering $2,808,701. This valuable resource allows MHS to stretch its budget and impact more lives annually.

During this week set aside to thank our volunteers, we think it is important to take a step back and remember that they are choosing to support a cause they’re passionate about. Our volunteer body is made up of people from all walks of life: from nurses, students, librarians, and musicians to engineers, managers, retail workers, retirees, and everyone in-between. Each of these special people make it a priority to give back to their community and to our animals. We think that’s beautiful – and definitely worth celebrating!
