After an investigation led by Michigan Humane and the Detroit Police Department seized 35 dogs in an alleged dog fighting ring on Friday, a Detroit man is facing multiple felony charges.

Julian Akyan was arraigned Monday morning at the 36th District Court. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said 11 felony charges would be brought up against the 29-year-old, including animal fighting, animal cruelty and gun possession.

WDIV reports that Akyan is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and barred from having any contact with animals. A probable cause conference will be held March 21 and a preliminary exam is set for March 28.

Michigan Humane investigators and DPD raided a house on Edmore Dr in Detroit and three other properties on Friday. Among the dogs seized was a “champion” fighting dog, firearms and ammunition.

“I’ve been doing this for nine years and have investigated hundreds of allegations of dog fighting,” Michigan Humane Investigator Elise Ramsey says. “I believe with 100% certainty that this individual is involved in organized dogfighting based on the evidence we have located.”
