Kiwanis International is one of the oldest community service organizations in the world, and it all started in Detroit 104 years ago. Every January, the Michigan District of Kiwanis celebrates Kiwanis’ birthday by hosting a weekend long event in Detroit called Founders Day. Kiwanis members from all over Michigan gather for leadership workshops, networking, and to serve the community. This year, one of their service projects was to make dog toys for the Michigan Humane Society.

James Edwards, a member of the Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis Club, lead the service efforts of the event. James is passionate about serving the community, especially our furry friends. When asked why he chose the Michigan Humane Society as one of the projects, he said, “I feel really bad for mistreated dogs and I wanted to show the dogs some love, which is why we made these dog toys to play with, to show them that not all humans are the same.”

The group made the toys out of t-shirts. They cut the shirts into strips and then braided them into ropes. Many of the Kiwanis members got creative and thought about how their dogs would like to play and made different variations of the ropes.

Thanks to the Kiwanis members who participated, 100 dog toys were made and donated to the Rochester Hills Adoption Center!
