MHS for Military

Presented by:

The Michigan Humane Society recognizes the incredibly important role that pets play in our lives- they provide us with unconditional love, support and a connection to the world. When a companion animal can also help a veteran or someone that is active duty military in exchange for a loving home, everyone wins! As a ‘thank you’ to those that have served our country, we are proud to offer an exclusive program for MHS adopters.

MHS for Military aims to connect companion animals in need of homes with veterans and active duty service personnel to create new families. The program includes the following:

  • Fee-waived adoptions on any pet, including kittens and puppies, for any qualified adopter
  • MHS’s adoption package includes pet sterilization, age-appropriate vaccines, deworming and more
  • Discounts on veterinary care for the first year, valid at all 3 MHS locations
  • Opportunity to activate additional benefits through the Pets for Patriots program (information provided at time of adoption)

To participate in the MHS for Military program, customers must bring the following at time of adoption:

  • Proof of honorable discharge
    • DD 214
    • DD 256
    • Veteran’s designation on state ID
  • Driver’s license (or State of Michigan ID card) with current address.
  • Veterinary records for any current pets or provide vet’s phone number.
  • All members of your household-MHS prefers (and in some cases requires) that all members of the household meet and are comfortable with the pet.
  • Any canine family members-MHS prefers (and in some cases requires) dog-to-dog meetings between your current dog(s) and potential new canine family members.

The MHS for Military discount is available at off-site or special adoption events provided all adoption requirements are met. Check out our Facebook page for the most up-to-date listing!

The fee-waived adoption is non-transferable, and any adopted pets must reside with the veteran or active duty adopter.

All adopters will need to fill out a preliminary adoption form, which can be accessed here or completed at the facility when you arrive. Most adoptions can be processed same day so you and your new best friend can start your adventure together!

Questions about the program can be directed to the MHS Animal Resource Center at 1-866-MHUMANE.
