Education

The Michigan Humane Society offers educational tours and presentations for metro Detroit area youth. Interactive presentations teach children respect for all animals, safety around animals, and responsible pet care.

We are pleased to provide a new on-demand webinar for engaging your classroom (or other group) in humane education. Above you’ll find a 30-minute humane education presentation on safe animal handling and careers in animal welfare. This video is appropriate for middle grade youth, but as always we recommend previewing it to determine whether it meets the needs of the children viewing it. Please also be mindful that portions of this were recorded during social distancing efforts, and contain adults wearing masks.

Youth Enrichment Classroom Program
MHS’ Youth Enrichment Program includes a presentation and/or a tour that teaches children about our organization, the many different programs we provide, and an interactive lesson that explains the importance of responsible pet care and respect for all animals.

We are pleased to offer our Youth Enrichment Program in your classroom, or at one of our adoption centers in Detroit, Westland, Rochester Hills, or Sterling Heights Petco (with specific days/times available at each location).

Humane Education Lesson Plans
The Michigan Humane Society continually strives to be a leader in teaching humane values to students of all ages. In an effort to assist humane educators, we have made available standards-aligned lesson plans, reviewed by the Michigan Board of Education. Lesson plans may be downloaded for free in an easy-to-follow format for teachers or youth groups. Lessons may be used in a variety of ways: for a full week of instruction focusing on humane values, spread throughout a month, or used as a theme.

Student Projects on Animal Welfare Topics
MHS encourages students to choose animal welfare topics for their school projects. We are delighted to serve as a resource for research papers, presentations, or speeches. Students benefit from learning and can also help to educate others on topics such as pet adoption, pet overpopulation, animal cruelty investigation, responsible pet ownership, lost pets, laws to protect animals, or similar issues.

Student Fundraising and Craft Projects
Students often ask what they can do to help the animals in our care. Your school may wish to hold a fundraiser, make a monetary donation, or do a craft project. Check out our Just for Kids section here.
